IN THE SKY WITH Z-AIR
FLOOD RESISTANCE, WILDLIFE TRACKING, AND FORESTRY MAPPING WITH THE A6D-100C
The perspective from the sky is an experience unlike any other. This unique view of the world is what motivated Darryl Zubot, certified commercial pilot, to found Z-Air. Combining a love for the skies with his background in photography and graphic design, Z-Air provides aerial photography services for mapping, modeling, IR detection, and oblique documentation. Relying on hardware and software from AeroScientific, Darryl started out using a full-frame DSLR system, but quickly realized that in order to offer the highest photogrammetry solutions, a higher quality image capture system was needed – a solution found with the Hasselblad A6D-100c aerial camera.
As Z-Air’s Chief Pilot, Darryl has since expanded the scope of his work after switching to the Hasselblad A6D-100c aerial camera system. "A large amount of the work I’ve been doing so far has been for the forestry sector. I am currently mapping a forestry site that is 8200 km2. The company who hires me specializes in post processing data for government contracts/large corporations. They have worked with all types of camera systems and are particularly pleased with the Hasselblad A6D-100c camera data," explains Darryl.
Z-Air’s most crucial flight with the A6D-100c thus far has been assisting the Canadian government with flooding that occurred this past spring in Western Alberta. The images lent guidance to emergency services alongside improving the flood resistance of risk areas in the future.
In recent missions for Parks Canada, the country’s national parks administration, Z-Air recognised major potential for the Hasselblad A6D-100c to assist with wildlife tracking across 407,000+ square kilometers under the agency’s protection.
Other upcoming endeavors include mapping the Athabasca Glacier in the Columbian Icefields, northwest of the renowned Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The A6D-100c aerial system will provide high quality imagery for a UK-based team studying the glacier’s recession.
The Hasselblad A6D aerial system is small, affordable, and versatile which really stands out. It fills a gap between the large mapping systems and UAV’s. My business has tripled in work/profits since I started using the A6D system. It has also opened doors to other work just from getting in the door with some of these large clients which would not have been possible otherwise.
I would highly recommend this system to others, mainly because of the support that I have been given by both Hasselblad and AeroScientific. The fact that I could use my single engine aircraft to fly such a powerful mapping system without requiring a camera operator and have the most affordable aerial system out there was the main reason for choosing the Hasselblad A6D-100c.
