Hasegawa Tohaku Sumi Composition:
Tenjuan, Nanzenji Fusumae Research Exhibition

Tenjuan in Nanzenji Temple, Kyoto is home to some 400-year-old fusuma paintings by Hasegawa Tohaku. As the traditional sliding doors are considered important cultural property, they are no longer in situ at the temple but are archived in Fumonden repository.

Dr. Miho Suga from Tokyo University of the Arts (Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku) carried out research on the 32 fusumae panels, representing a series of Zen fables, between 2009 and 2014. Naoto Kozuka, also from Tokyo University of the Arts, carried out extensive documentation of the paintings, using a Hasselblad Multi-Shot 200MS camera.

The images were reproduced on to washi paper and made in to fusuma, and for a short period of time were replaced in there original position in the temple, so that the ‘ma’ could be truly appreciated. The reproduction work turned out to be just the beginning of the research: the result shows that through the use of the Multi-Shot camera, the old sumi mark makings have a new life as contemporary art.

There is a book available, published by Seigensha Art Publishing, Inc., telling the story Fusuma Paintings by Hasegawa Tohaku: A Narrative Art at Tenjuan, Nanzenji.
