Hasselblad Celebrates Photography in New York

26/10/2009 Exhibit, seminars, photo shoots, portfolio reviews, reception headline at MILK Studios.

Hasselblad’s Celebration of Photography at MILK Studios on October 22 further enriched the PhotoPlus Expo opening-day experience. Throughout the day, photographers visited the penthouse for seminars, photographer workshops, hands-on experience with Hasselblad gear, and a close-up view of the Masters 2009 Finalists exhibition.

Among the day’s interactive highlights:

  • A studio experience with the H3DII-50, during which Hasselblad technical specialists shared product insights and dispelled the most enduring medium-format digital technology myths.
  • A live shoot with the Hasselblad H3DII-50 and New York model Silvi.
  • Personal portfolio reviews with Magnum photographer Bruce Davidson.
  • A fashion and portrait photography seminar with Hasselblad 2008 Masters photographer August Bradley.
The evening reception drew some 200 photographers, press, and industry execs to the 15th street MILK Studios penthouse. Under a spectacular starry sky, guests gathered on the super-sized patio savoring panoramic views of the city, while heart-pounding music streamed inside and out.

Hasselblad representatives welcoming guests to the studio included Christian Norgaard and Peter Stig from Denmark, and Mark Duhaime and Elaina Alonzo from the U.S. Among the photographers seen in the faint outdoor light were Masters photographers August Bradley, Marco Grob, and Hans Strand; Magnum photographer Bruce Davidson; street photographer Joel Meyerowitz; beauty/fashion photographer Douglas Dubler; fashion and glamour photographer Rolando Gomez; commercial and portrait photographer Allison Earnest; and fashion and portrait photographer Helene DeLillo.

Inside the studio, guests made their way past the Masters 2009 100 finalists’ images—one for each of the 100 photographer finalists from around the world—trying to select their favorites in each of 10 photo categories: Architecture, Editorial, Fashion, Fine Art, General Photography, Nature/Landscape, Portrait, Product, Social/Wedding, and Upcoming.

This is the first year that the Hasselblad Masters Jury is reserving one jury spot for the public. The public vote will be combined with the Jury’s votes to determine the Hasselblad Masters winners for 2009. The Hasselblad Masters Finalists exhibition and reception provided a first-class ending to an exhilarating, exhausting opening day at PhotoPlus Expo.

Watch for news on the exhibition’s final stop: London in December.
