“Implicit in the vibrant still life photography of Luigi Gattinara
is an anachronistic tension between subject and medium.
Influenced by 17th century Dutch painting and old masters such as Caravaggio, Gattinara’s images achieve an almost painterly quality through light and color modifications.
The result is what the artist refers to as a “time warp effect” in which still life
as a formal study is “rediscovered through the lens of a camera.”
Born in Rome, Luigi Castelli Gattinara di Zubiena has been working in
the photographic medium for over thirty years.
He began his career as a photographer working for some
of the most renowned advertising and publishing companies
in Rome, which eventually led him to Caracas, Venezuela, where he collaborated with various international advertising firms.
He returned to Italy in 1984, in order to open his own studio in Milan.
His work has received exhibitions in Italy, France, Germany and New York.
